Tips to help secure your next lesson with a student

Here are the things that most help you turn a first lesson into an ongoing relationship.

Set expectations and plan ahead in your first lesson. Our most successful tutors outline a series of lessons and what they’ll cover, so the student or parent knows what to expect.
Give regular feedback. Keep students and parents updated on stronger and weaker areas and the progress being made. People like to see results.
Make the first session count. Ask what they’re struggling with so you teach something new rather than going over what they already know.
Set homework if appropriate. A small task before the next lesson helps.
Ask for feedback. It tells you whether they’re enjoying lessons and helps you improve.
Don’t overstretch. Focus on your current students rather than taking on too many new ones.
