National Insurance Number Requirement

Modified on Fri, 24 Jul at 4:09 PM

Under UK legislation, tutors must provide a Tax Identification Number (TIN), which in the UK is usually your National Insurance (NI) number. This helps HMRC track income and tax for self-employed workers, including tutors. If you don’t provide your National Insurance (NI) number, we’ll temporarily suspend your account, and reactivate it once you do.

What a TIN is

A Tax Identification Number is a unique identifier tax authorities use to track your tax obligations. In the UK it’s usually your National Insurance number, used by HMRC to record your income, tax, and National Insurance contributions.

Why this is required

The legislation ensures self-employed workers are properly identified and their tax contributions accurately tracked, which helps prevent tax evasion.

What this means for you

You’ll need to provide your NI number so we can report your earnings to HMRC. If you’re not already registered with HMRC as self-employed, you’ll need to do that too.

How to provide your NI number

On the app:

  1. Go to More, then Settings.
  2. Select the National Insurance number section and complete the form.

On the web:

  1. Click your photo at the top, then Account settings.
  2. Select National Insurance number and complete the form.

What happens after you provide it

We pass your earnings details to HMRC as required by the legislation. You can see this information on your dashboard.
