What Devices and Setup Do I Need for Online Lessons?
To make sure your online lessons run smoothly and professionally, here's everything you’ll need to get set up for success in Lessonspace:
Best Devices to Use
We recommend using a laptop or desktop computer (PC or Mac) for the best experience. These devices are fully compatible with all the classroom features, including screen sharing and advanced tools like the equation editor.
Mac users: Ensure you're on macOS 10.12.1 or newer.
Windows/Linux users: Just make sure your system is up to date and running a supported browser.
Can I Use a Tablet or Phone?
We would always recommend using a laptop or desktop computer for your lessons for the best experience and results.
- Tablets (like iPads) can access the classroom.
- On iPad, use Safari and ensure you’re running iOS 11 or higher.
Which Browser Should I Use?
To use Lessonspace, your browser must support WebRTC, the tech that powers video and interactivity.
We recommend:
- Google Chrome (version 115+)
- Microsoft Edge (115+)
- Firefox (115+)
- Safari (16+) on Mac or iOS
Always use the latest version of your browser for best performance. You can check this by searching “latest [browser name] version” or using built-in browser settings.
Do I Need a Webcam or Microphone?
Yes! To fully interact in your lessons, you’ll need:
- A webcam (built-in or external)
- A microphone – ideally a headset with a mic to avoid echo and feedback. Avoid relying on laptop speakers alone.
What Internet Speed Do I Need?
A strong, stable internet connection is key. Here's what we recommend:
- At least 6 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload for smooth video and screen sharing.
- Use a wired ethernet connection if possible or sit near your Wi-Fi router to avoid drops in connection.
- You can check your connection speed by Googling “internet speed test.”
Test Your Setup Before the Lesson
We'd always recommend using our demo classroom to test your set up ahead of lessons, read more about doing so here.
Using a Writing Tablet?
If you’re teaching subjects like maths or physics and plan to handwrite on the whiteboard, a writing tablet can make things much easier. Make sure it's compatible with your computer before purchasing.
